About GAB
GAB is short for graded aggregate base, the name used on many state road specs. Ask a quarry for GAB and you get crushed stone with the fines left in. Spread it, wet it and roll it, and it locks into a hard layer that sheds water.
Also called crusher run, ABC, dense grade base, crush and run, driveway gravel.
More about GAB
Several state road departments use the term on plans and specs, and quarries in those states print it on the scale ticket. Homeowners pick it up from the contractors who order it.
Graded means the stone passes a set of screens in set amounts, from about 1.5 inches down to the dust, so every load behaves the same way under a roller. Inspectors on road jobs check the moisture and the packed density of each layer before the next one goes down.
For a pad or parking area, cut down to firm ground, spread GAB in 4 to 6 inch lifts, keep it damp, and roll it until the surface tightens and takes on a slight shine. Plan on 6 inches packed for cars and more for heavy trucks. A load picked up after a rain carries extra water in its fines, so the ticket weight runs a bit high for the stone you get.
