About crush and run
Crush and run is a common spoken name for crusher run, the crushed stone that comes with its dust. Ask for it by either name and you get the same load at the same weight. People use it most for drives and turnarounds that take cars every day.
Also called crusher run, ABC, dense grade base, GAB, driveway gravel.
More about crush and run
The name comes from how the stone is made: rock is crushed, and the whole run off the crusher is sold without screening out the small pieces. You will hear crush and run at the counter and on job sites more often than you will see it on a road plan.
Because the dust stays in, crush and run sets up hard when it is wet and packed. Spread it a few inches at a time, dampen it, and run a plate or a roller over it until it no longer shifts underfoot. A turnaround or parking spot for pickups does well with about 6 inches packed.
Spread too thin over soft clay, it will pump mud up through the stone and break into potholes, so firm the ground first or lay fabric. The fines in it hold rainwater, which means a load that sat out uncovered is heavier on the scale than one that stayed dry.
