About ABC
ABC stands for aggregate base course, the road builders' name for this stone. Quarries that sell to paving crews often list it this way on the ticket. It is the same stone at the same weight, so the answer matches the crusher run page.
Also called crusher run, dense grade base, GAB, crush and run, driveway gravel.
More about ABC
The letters show up on road plans, bid sheets and scale tickets in states where the road department writes its spec that way. Contractors who learned the name on highway work carry it over to driveways and parking lots.
Ask for ABC and you get crushed stone with every size from about 1.5 inches down to dust. The spread of sizes is the point: small grains fill the gaps between big ones, so the layer packs tight and holds a loaded truck.
Put it down in 4 inch lifts, wet it lightly, and roll or plate each lift before the next. A home driveway commonly has 4 to 6 inches packed; a commercial lot or a road built to state spec often gets 8 inches or more. The dust soaks up rain, so a load hauled in wet weather weighs more per cubic yard than the 1.4 figure used here.
