About driveway gravel
Driveway gravel is what many people call the stone they want, and most suppliers answer with crusher run. It is crushed stone with its dust left in, so it packs into a hard surface you can drive on. If you want a clean stone on top instead, ask for #57 or #78 by name.
Also called crusher run, ABC, dense grade base, GAB, crush and run.
More about driveway gravel
Driveway gravel is not a size on any chart, so the words mean whatever the supplier stocks for driveways. In most places that is crusher run; some send a crushed stone with fewer fines, or a clean top stone, so say which layer you are building.
A new gravel driveway for cars is usually 4 to 6 inches of crusher run packed over firm, cleared ground, sometimes with fabric under it on clay. Crown it so the middle sits a few inches above the edges and rain runs off to the sides instead of down the tire tracks.
An old driveway that has gone thin and rutted often needs only 2 inches of new stone after the holes are cut out and filled. Stone bought in a wet spell carries water in its dust, and the scale counts that water as stone. A tight budget can go further with crushed concrete as the base layer, where a recycler is close by.
