About crusher run
Crusher run is crushed stone mixed with its own stone dust. The dust fills the gaps, so it packs down hard and stays put under a truck. It is the usual base under a driveway, a shed pad or pavers, laid about 4 to 6 inches deep.
Also called ABC, dense grade base, GAB, crush and run, driveway gravel.
More about crusher run
Crusher run comes off the crusher with every size still in it, from pieces about an inch and a half across down to powder. Some quarries sell the same product as crush and run, ABC, GAB or dense grade base, and some sell it as driveway gravel.
Spread it with a box blade or a skid steer bucket in lifts no thicker than about 4 inches. Wet each lift lightly and run a plate compactor or roller over it until your boot heel barely marks it. For a car driveway, 4 to 6 inches packed is common; for a lane that takes loaded dump trucks, go 8 inches or more over firm ground.
The dust that makes it pack also holds water. A load that sat in the rain can weigh noticeably more on the scale than the same pile in August, so a ticket weight is not a fixed volume. Packing also shrinks it, and most crews order 15 to 20 percent extra so the finished depth comes out right.
