About red mulch
Red mulch is ground wood dyed a brick red with iron oxide, the same pigment used to color concrete. It is the brightest of the dyed colors and the one most likely to stain a light walk. It is weighed and sold just like black or brown dyed mulch.
Also called dyed mulch, black mulch, brown mulch.
More about red mulch
Iron oxide is a rust colored mineral pigment, and it holds on the wood through rain. It does fade toward pink in hard sun after a year or so. A thin top dressing of about an inch each spring brings the red back without piling the bed too deep.
Spread 2 to 3 inches over weeded ground, with a clean edge cut between the bed and the lawn so the red line stays sharp. Water it in right after spreading so loose pigment settles into the bed instead of running onto a sidewalk later. Hose off any red dust on concrete or brick before it dries.
Under a deck or along a fence, red can look out of place once it fades, so look at a weathered bed before you commit a whole yard to it. Wet red mulch weighs more than the 0.4 tons a yard this page assumes. For red mulch sold in bags, the Bagged calculator works out how many to buy.
