About brown mulch
Brown mulch is ground wood dyed a warm brown, close to the color of fresh hardwood bark. The dye keeps it from turning gray as fast as plain wood mulch does. Many suppliers sell it beside black and red as part of their dyed mulch line.
Also called dyed mulch, black mulch, red mulch.
More about brown mulch
Undyed hardwood mulch starts out brown but weathers to gray within a season. Brown dye holds the fresh look longer and covers the pale color of recycled wood, so a bed of it looks like new bark from a short way off. Up close, dyed wood is more even in color than real bark.
Spread it 2 to 3 inches in beds and 3 to 4 inches on a path, where foot traffic packs it thinner. On a path, a layer of fabric under it slows weeds and keeps the mulch from mixing into the dirt below. Keep it back from tree trunks the way you would with any mulch.
Brown is less likely to stain than red, but loose dye can still mark a light walk while it is wet. Add about an inch each spring to bring the color back. A load that sat in the rain weighs more than 0.4 tons a yard. If you buy brown mulch in bags, the Bagged calculator gives the count.
