About dyed mulch
Dyed mulch is ground wood colored black, brown or red so the beds stay one even shade. The wood is often recycled pallets and clean scrap, ground fine and sprayed with colorant. Most of the color holds for about a year in full sun before it fades.
Also called black mulch, brown mulch, red mulch.
More about dyed mulch
Red and brown get their color from iron oxide and black gets its color from carbon, bound to the wood so it holds through rain. Ask whether the wood is fresh or recycled. Recycled wood should be free of treated lumber, painted pieces and nails, and a good yard will tell you how they screen for it.
Spread 2 to 3 inches and water it in the first day, which settles the layer and rinses off loose dye before it can stain a walk. Wear gloves, since fresh dye marks skin and clothes for a day or two. Wipe colored dust off concrete edges right away, because dye left wet on a light patio can leave a mark.
Each year, rake the old layer and top it with about an inch of the same color to bring the shade back. Fresh dyed mulch is often damp when loaded, and a wet load can weigh more than 0.4 tons a yard. Before you decide between bulk and bags, get the bag count from the Bagged calculator.
