About washed 57
Washed 57 is #57 stone rinsed at the plant so no dust rides along. It is what septic installers and drain crews ask for when the stone sits around pipe. Once the water drains off, it weighs the same as #57.
More about washed 57
Not every pile of #57 is washed. Some quarries sell it straight off the screens with a light coat of dust; washed 57 has gone under spray bars as well, and the pieces look darker and cleaner in the pile.
That clean surface matters where stone surrounds pipe. Dust from unwashed stone can work into the holes in a perforated pipe and slow a drain, and septic rules in many counties call for washed stone in the trench. Washed 57 is also the middle layer in many permeable paver builds, where water has to pass straight through.
Put it in place loose and rake it level; there is nothing to pack. Right off the wash plant a load carries water and can weigh a few percent more than when it dries, and a truck weighed that way brings slightly less stone than the same tonnage dry. Store a leftover pile on a tarp or a hard surface, because washed stone dumped on bare ground picks up soil from below.
