About #57 stone
#57 stone is clean crushed stone, mostly between half an inch and an inch across, with no dust. Water runs straight through it, so it is the usual pick for French drains, behind walls and under concrete. On a driveway it goes on top of the base, about 2 to 3 inches deep. With no fines filling the gaps it weighs a little less than crusher run.
More about #57 stone
The number comes from the standard size chart that road departments use for crushed stone. A #57 load passes a 1.5 inch screen, most of it lands between 1 inch and about 3/16 inch, and very little gets through a screen with holes about 3/32 inch wide. That missing small stuff is what keeps it open to water.
For a French drain, line the trench with filter fabric, lay a couple of inches of stone, set the pipe, and cover it with at least 4 to 6 inches more before you fold the fabric over. Under a slab, 4 inches of #57 makes a level bed that drains. A plate compactor settles it in a pass or two, but it never locks up hard.
On its own over bare soil, #57 rolls under tires and ruts, so keep it as a top coat over a packed layer of crusher run. Washed #57 drains best because the rinse takes off dust that could coat a drain pipe. Straight out of the wash pile it carries water weight for a day or so, then dries back to about 1.35 tons per cubic yard.
