About iron slag
Iron slag is a common name for blast furnace slag, the leftover from making iron. It is the same light, porous stone at the same weight, so the answer matches the blast furnace slag page.
Also called blast furnace slag.
More about iron slag
Some scale tickets and older hands call it iron slag because it comes from the iron furnace, not the steel mill. The name tells you which kind you are getting: the light kind, full of small holes, gray to tan in color.
Do not mix it up with steel slag. A cubic yard of steel slag weighs far more, so if you order by the ton using this page and the load turns out to be steel slag, you get far fewer cubic yards than you planned. If the ticket just says slag, ask the yard which furnace the pile came from.
Lay base-grade iron slag in lifts of about 4 inches, dampen each lift, and pack it with a plate or a roller until it stops moving. A pile that has sat through rain holds water in its holes, and the scale counts that water as stone. A dry load from under a shed roof comes closest to the weight used here.
