About blast furnace slag
Blast furnace slag is the light, porous leftover from making iron, crushed and screened like quarry stone. Air-cooled in open pits, it is full of small holes, so it weighs much less than limestone or steel slag. If your yard sells steel slag, use that page; it is far heavier.
Also called iron slag.
More about blast furnace slag
An iron furnace melts ore with limestone, and the stony part floats off the top as a liquid. Left to cool slowly in the open air, it hardens into gray, honeycombed rock that a crusher breaks into the sizes a yard sells.
Spread and pack base-grade blast furnace slag like crusher run, in damp lifts of about 4 inches, with a plate compactor or roller. Its sharp, rough pieces knit together under a car or a light truck, and a packed layer drains better than a dusty limestone base.
The small holes soak up water, so a load hauled after rain can weigh well over the 1.25 figure here. Because it is light, a dump truck often fills up by volume before it reaches its weight limit, and one load covers more ground than the same tons of heavier stone. Ask whether a pile sold simply as slag is the iron kind or the steel kind before you order.
