About regular topsoil
Regular topsoil is the name many people use for topsoil that has not been screened, and most suppliers fill the order with unscreened topsoil. It still has its clods, roots and small rocks, so it costs less than screened topsoil. Ask which one you are getting, because some yards call their screened topsoil regular too.
Also called unscreened topsoil.
More about regular topsoil
Regular topsoil is not a grade on any chart. At most yards it means topsoil sold as it comes off the pile, but the word changes from place to place, so ask whether it has been through a screen before the truck is loaded. Better still, go look at the pile: unscreened soil shows clods, roots and stones on the surface, while screened soil looks crumbly and even.
Use it for rough grading, raising a low area, or filling a bed you will till. For a finished lawn, cover it with 2 to 3 inches of screened topsoil so seed or sod has a smooth bed. Rake out the biggest rocks and roots as you spread it, since they only get harder to pull once grass is growing over them.
It settles once it is spread and rained on, so order a little extra for a raised area. It is weighed like any topsoil, so a wet load brings fewer yards per ton than a dry one.
