About pine bark nuggets
Pine bark nuggets are chunks of bark stripped from pine logs and sorted by size, most of them 1 to 3 inches across. They break down slowly and keep their reddish brown color longer than shredded mulch. They are light enough to float, so they suit flat beds better than slopes.
More about pine bark nuggets
The bark comes off pine logs at the mill before the wood is sawn. Screens sort it into large nuggets, mini nuggets and fines, and the large pieces are the ones sold under this name. Because it is mostly the tough outer bark, it rots slowly, and a bed often goes two or three years before it needs more.
Spread nuggets 2 to 3 inches deep over weeded ground, or over landscape fabric where you want a clean, open look. Big pieces leave gaps between them, so a slightly deeper layer blocks more light from weed seeds. Rake it level and keep it off the base of shrubs.
Bark is light and it floats. A hard rain or a downspout can lift nuggets off a slope and carry them onto the lawn or into the street, so on a hill pick shredded mulch, or edge the bed with a lip that holds the bark in. A pile that sat out through rain weighs more than 0.35 tons a yard until it dries.
