About pine bark mini nuggets
Pine bark mini nuggets are the small screened pieces of pine bark, mostly half an inch to an inch and a half across. They lie closer together than large nuggets and look neater in small beds and along walks. They are still light enough to float off a slope in a heavy rain.
More about pine bark mini nuggets
Minis come off the same screens as large nuggets, sorted into the smaller size. The finer pieces fill in around bedding plants and ground covers without burying them, and they look in scale next to small shrubs. Some gardeners also mix them into potting soil to open it up so water drains.
For a bed, spread 2 to 3 inches and rake it even; a refresh needs about an inch over what is left. Because the pieces are small, they settle into a tighter layer than big nuggets and do a better job of shading out weed seeds. Keep the layer back from stems, where damp bark can rot soft plant tissue.
Small bark pieces wash away even more easily than large ones. Water running off a roof or down a grade picks them up and leaves them in a line along the edge of the bed. Use an edging that stands above the mulch, or choose shredded mulch for anything steeper than a gentle grade. Damp minis weigh more than the 0.35 tons a yard figure, so a ticket written in the rain shows more weight for the same yards.
