About cypress mulch
Cypress mulch is shredded wood and bark from cypress trees, pale gold to light tan when new. It mats into a layer that holds on a mild slope and weathers to silver gray in the sun. Garden centers sell a lot of it in bags as well as loose by the yard.
More about cypress mulch
Cypress grows in wet bottomland across the South. The mulch is shredded from whole trees or from mill scraps, so a load can be mostly wood with some bark mixed in. Young cypress does not carry the rot resistance of old heartwood, so expect it to break down about as fast as other shredded mulch.
Spread 2 to 3 inches in a bed and keep it a few inches back from trunks. The stringy pieces lock together, which helps on a bank where bark nuggets would slide. To freshen the color, rake the top to turn up the layer under it, or add about 1 inch of new mulch each year.
Bagged cypress is easy to find, and the Bagged calculator tells you how many bags a bed takes. For a large bed a bulk load is usually easier on the back and quicker to spread from a wheelbarrow. Fresh cypress holds water, so a load picked up wet can weigh more than 0.4 tons a yard on the scale.
