About washed gravel
Washed gravel is stone that has been run through water at the plant to rinse off dust, sand and clay. Clean stone is what septic fields, drain lines and the bed under a slab need, because nothing in it will clog. Ask what size you are getting, since the word washed covers many sizes.
More about washed gravel
Washing happens on a screen deck with spray bars: the stone rides across while water carries the fine grains off to a settling pond. What is left leaves no muddy film in your hand. Crushed washed stone and washed round gravel are both sold under this name.
Septic codes in many places call for washed stone in the drain field trench, often somewhere between 3/4 inch and 2.5 inches, with 6 inches or more beneath the pipe and a couple of inches over it. The same clean stone wrapped in fabric makes a French drain that stays open for years.
It will not pack into a hard surface, so it is a poor top for a driveway on a slope. A load fresh from the wash plant drips for hours and can weigh noticeably more than the same stone once it has dried, so a load weighed wet reaches a little less far than this page shows.
