About surge stone
Surge stone is large, rough crushed rock, often anywhere from 3 to 8 inches across. It goes into mud and soft clay first, to stop machines and driveways from sinking. A layer about a foot thick, capped with crusher run, bridges ground that nothing else will.
More about surge stone
Surge is not on the standard number chart, so the size changes from one quarry to the next; ask what top size you are getting before you order. It also goes by surge rock, and some places sell the same job as bridging stone.
Push it into the soft spot with a dozer or the back of an excavator bucket until it stops sinking, then cap it with 4 to 6 inches of crusher run to fill the gaps and give a surface you can drive on. Fabric under it helps on deep mud. Do not try to pack it with a plate; tracks and a loaded truck do that work.
On a wet clay lot it can get a foundation crew in a week before the ground would have dried on its own. Rain runs off and through it, so wet or dry, the scale shows about the same. Expect to lose a good share of the first layer into the mud.
