About screenings
Screenings are the fine stone dust left over when rock is crushed and sorted. Wet and tamped, they set up firm and smooth, a good bed for pavers and flagstone. A paver bed is usually about 1 inch of screenings over a packed base. Being so fine they leave the least air between grains, so they weigh the most of these.
More about screenings
Screenings go by several names: stone dust, crusher dust, quarry fines and, in some places, 1/4 minus. Most of the grains are smaller than 3/16 inch, and a good share of the pile is powder.
Under pavers, spread about an inch over a packed crusher run base, screed it flat with a straight board, and set the pavers without stepping on the screeded bed. In a pipe trench, a few inches of screenings make a smooth bed that will not dent the pipe wall. Between flagstones, sweep the fines into the joints and mist them so they firm up.
Screenings hold water the way sand does. A damp load can weigh several percent more than a dry one, and soaked fines smear and pump under a plate compactor, so let a wet pile drain before you tamp it. They also wash off a slope in a hard rain, so keep them under a cover layer or inside an edge.
