About crushed concrete
Crushed concrete is old slabs, curbs and footings broken up and run through a crusher. Graded with its fines, it packs hard like crusher run and makes a good driveway or pad base. It weighs less than stone, so the same tons cover more ground.
More about crushed concrete
Recyclers pull the rebar and wire out with magnets, but a few bits of steel, brick or asphalt can still turn up. It is sold in two common forms: a base grade with the fines left in, often called recycled crusher run, and a clean grade screened to roughly #57 size.
Lay the base grade in 4 inch lifts, dampen it, and run a plate or roller over each lift. The old cement in the fines can stiffen slightly after it is wet and packed, which helps a driveway hold its shape. Over firm ground, 4 to 6 inches packed is normal for cars.
Keep it out of drain fields and away from fish ponds and streams, because water that runs through fresh crushed concrete can be strongly alkaline for a while. Old concrete soaks up more water than solid stone, so a soaked pile can weigh noticeably more than the 1.3 figure here.
