About #4 stone
#4 stone is big, clean crushed stone, about 3/4 to 1.5 inches across. It bridges soft, wet ground and makes a job entrance that knocks mud off tires before they reach the road. It usually goes down 4 to 8 inches deep and gets a smaller stone on top.
More about #4 stone
On the standard size chart, a #4 load passes a 2 inch screen and most of the stone sits between 1.5 inches and 3/4 inch. It is larger than #57 and smaller than #3. The pieces are angular, so they wedge against each other when a loaded tire rolls over them.
Where a driveway crosses a soft or wet spot, lay woven fabric on the subgrade, spread 4 to 8 inches of #4, and track it in with the machine before you cap it with crusher run. The large stones spread the weight over the soft soil instead of punching through it.
It also works as drain rock around large perforated pipe and as clean backfill behind a retaining wall. Because the stones are big and clean, rain runs out of them within hours, and the wet weight runs only slightly over the dry. You will lose some stone into very soft ground, so order a little extra the first time.
