About #3 stone
#3 stone is clean crushed stone, mostly 1 to 2 inches across. It goes in the bottom of deep drains, around big pipe and under a driveway on soft ground. Lay it 6 inches or more and fill the top gaps with #57 or crusher run.
More about #3 stone
In the standard chart, #3 passes a 2.5 inch screen and most of it is held between 2 inches and 1 inch. Each piece runs from about the size of a walnut to a small egg, angular and clean. Some quarries sell it as 2 inch clean or ballast stone.
Curtain drains, the trench around a large culvert and some septic drain fields use stone this size, because the big gaps carry a lot of water. On a muddy lot it can be pushed into the soft ground as a working pad, then topped with smaller stone so cars and boots are not on loose rock.
Spread it with a loader or dozer and track it in; a plate compactor bounces on stone this big. Water runs through it in seconds, so a wet load weighs almost the same as a dry one. Expect some of the bottom layer to sink into mud and disappear the first time you lay it.
