About #8 stone
#8 stone is clean crushed stone about 3/8 inch across, with the dust washed out. It is the bedding layer under permeable pavers, where rain has to soak straight down. Spread about 2 inches thick and screeded flat, it gives the pavers a level bed that still drains.
More about #8 stone
On the size chart, #8 passes a 1/2 inch screen, nearly all of it is caught between 3/8 inch and the #16 screen, and almost none of it is fine enough to call sand. That keeps open space between the pieces, which is the reason to buy it over #89.
A typical permeable paver build has a thick layer of large open stone at the bottom, about 4 inches of #57 above that, then 1.5 to 2 inches of #8 for the bed. The same #8 gets swept into the paver joints so water can find its way down. It is also used in tar and chip work and to bed small pipe in wet trenches.
Rake and screed it rather than pounding it with a heavy plate; once the pavers are laid, a pass with a plate over a protective pad seats them. Clean #8 drains within minutes, so its weight comes back close to dry once the pile has stood a few hours.
