About #78 stone
#78 stone is crushed stone mostly between 1/2 inch and about 1/8 inch. It sits between #67 and #8 in size, small enough to rake smooth and big enough to stay clean. Paving crews mix it into asphalt and spread it for chip seal on country roads. As a top coat on a driveway or walk, about 2 inches is plenty.
More about #78 stone
By the standard chart, all of a #78 load passes a 3/4 inch screen and nearly all of it passes 1/2 inch. Very little gets through the #8 screen, about 3/32 inch, so it stays open and drains well without being as coarse as #57.
Over a packed crusher run driveway, 1.5 to 2 inches of #78 gives a tidy top that does not fling big stones into the grass the way #57 can. On a garden path, lay it over a tamped base and run a plate over it once; the small, angular pieces settle in and stay walkable.
It also beds pipe and fills behind small walls where #57 would leave large gaps. A washed #78 pile dries out quickly, but water trapped in the smaller pores makes a freshly washed load weigh a little more than the same stone a day later. Order it by the ton and spread it with a skid steer or by hand from a wheelbarrow, since a thin top coat is easy to overdo.
