About bagged topsoil
Bagged topsoil is screened soil sold in small bags, often 0.75 or 1 cubic foot, so each one stays light enough to lift. It suits patching thin spots in a lawn, filling a planter or topping up a raised bed. For a whole new lawn the bag count climbs fast, and a bulk load is usually less work.
More about bagged topsoil
Soil is heavy for its size, which is why the bags are small. At the 1.1 tons a yard used on this page, one cubic foot of topsoil comes to roughly 80 pounds, and a 0.75 cubic foot bag about 60. Bags filled with dry soil often weigh less than that, and a bag that has sat in the rain weighs more.
Read the label before you buy. Topsoil, garden soil and raised bed mix sit side by side on the pallets, often in different bag sizes from 0.75 to 1.5 cubic feet. Garden soil and bed mixes carry compost or bark, so they weigh less per bag than plain topsoil. Type the size from the bag you picked into the Bag size box, because a wrong size throws off the whole count.
A cubic yard of soil is 36 bags at 0.75 cubic feet or 27 bags at 1 cubic foot, which is a lot of lifting and a lot of plastic. For a raised bed or a lawn, that is usually where a bulk delivery wins. Soil bags add weight fast in a car, so split a big order into trips and stay under the load limit printed on the driver's door sticker.
