About bagged sand
Bagged sand is washed, screened sand sold in heavy paper or plastic bags, usually about 50 pounds and half a cubic foot each. Play sand for a sandbox and all-purpose sand for leveling are the bags most people buy. This page uses the weight of play sand, 1.3 tons per cubic yard.
More about bagged sand
A 50 pound bag of sand holds roughly half a cubic foot, so it takes about two bags to make one cubic foot. At 1.3 tons a yard, one cubic foot of dry sand weighs close to 96 pounds. Sand that got damp inside the bag weighs more and sets into a lump, so press on a bag before you put it in the cart.
A sandbox 4 feet square filled 6 inches deep holds 8 cubic feet, which is 16 bags of half a cubic foot. Pour it, rake it level and wet it lightly so it settles, and expect to add a bag or two after the first few weeks of play. Under pavers, a 1 inch bed of sand covers about 6 square feet for each half cubic foot bag.
Twenty bags of sand is about half a ton, more than many cars should carry in one trip. Check the load limit printed on the sticker inside the driver's door and split the order if you need to. A cubic yard comes to around 54 of these bags, and at that size or more a bulk delivery of sand is far less lifting.
