About bagged pea gravel
Bagged pea gravel is small, smooth, rounded stone, about the size of a pea, sold in bags you can lift. Most bags hold half a cubic foot, which is about 50 pounds of stone. It suits a short path, the bottom of a planter, or a patch under a downspout.
More about bagged pea gravel
Stone is the heaviest thing sold by the bag at a garden center, so stone bags are the smallest. At the 1.4 tons a yard used here, one cubic foot of pea gravel weighs a little over 100 pounds, and half a cubic foot is as much as most people want to carry. Wet stone weighs a little more, but gravel drains fast and does not soak up water the way mulch or soil does.
Spread it about 2 inches deep on a path, over landscape fabric so the stones do not sink into the dirt. A half cubic foot bag covers about 3 square feet at that depth, so even a short path takes a stack of bags. An edging along each side keeps the round stones from rolling into the lawn.
A cubic yard of pea gravel is 54 bags of half a cubic foot and well over a ton of stone. At about a yard or more, a bulk load dumped where you need it is much easier than lifting that many bags. A car is easy to overload with stone, since a dozen bags is already around 600 pounds, so read the load limit on the driver's door sticker first.
